If
you have completed Basic Leader Training for your position in Scouting, and are
ready for the next level, you are ready for the Wood Badge advanced leadership
training course. In this course, Scouters learn leadership skills applicable to

College
of Commissioner Science
The
Bachelors program is the first-year, entry-level program for commissioners who
have completed Basic Commissioner Training. The Masters and Doctorate
program offer more advanced skills and problem solving experience, especially in
the administrative area of unit service. The Doctoral program challenges
the candidate to develop, organize, research and conduct an approved project
that will impact the quality of unit service. An Advanced Studies curriculum is
available for those commissioners who have a Masters or Doctorate Degree or who
are unable to participate in the full schedule of classes for a degree. Degrees
will be awarded only to registered commissioners and Service Team members. A
one-day Commissioner Basic Training course will provide you with the tools
needed to assist you in this position. Please check back for future dates
and times-

COPE Instructor Training
Want
to be part of an exciting older Scout program, a proven process for team
building, and youth and adult leadership development? We need you! Registered
adults and older youth interested in working in the COPE program can be trained
to help deliver the COPE experience as COPE Instructors through our COPE
Instructor Training Class. Instructors (18+) will lead COPE activities at Rum
River, and will work with COPE Directors to tailor the COPE program to the needs
of the participants. COPE Instructors in Training (16+) can assist on the
Course. Due to the strenuous nature of the class, all participants will need to
furnish a current health form, and will be screened at the beginning of the
class. Northern Star Council reserves the right to decline participation on the
basis of the health information and screening. Please check back for the 2006
COPE Training Session dates and times.
District
Committee Conference
Members
of the District Committee and members of the District Operating Committees can
complete Basic Training by attending a District Committee Conference. This
training event brings together District Committee members from district all over
the council for a day of learning how a District Committee functions and how the
operating committee work to bring the Scouting program to the district's youth
through the packs, troops, teams, and crews. This day-long event brings time to
learn new programs for the district and learn more from about the operating
committees.
Grey
Wolf (For Boy Scout Youth) (See
2007 Information)
- Grey
Wolf Youth Overview
- If
you agree to attend Grey Wolf, you will develop skills in: giving
presentations, team building, problem solving, decision making, Scout
skills, and troop operation. You must have the desire to make a long-term
commitment to continue mastering the skills provided, and utilize these
tools to benefit your home troop and Scouting.
- Grey
Wolf is unlike other Scout camps that you may have attended. We don’t work
on merit badges each day and we don’t have daily troop swims. We play a
lot of games and do a lot of Scout activities that are sometimes becoming a
lost art these days – big time pioneering and fire building are examples.
We work with new technology like GPS and geo-caching. We also sit down
several times each day to participate in sessions related to developing your
leadership skills. Prepare yourself for a very fast-paced week, to play
hard, to take notes during leadership presentations, and prepare yourself to
learn both for yourself and the future of your troop.
- Grey
Wolf Adult Overview
- Grey
Wolf is Northern Star Council’s home of the National Youth Leadership
Training program. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a
leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements
are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO.
- Content
is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on
immediate application of learning in a fun environment.
- The
skills of visualizing success, setting goals to accomplish that vision,
and developing a plan to get there are core to the leader’s role.
Other key course elements include leading yourself, communicating,
developing a team, applying a leadership style that fits the team’s
stage of development, and teaching skills to others. Sessions on problem
solving, making ethical decisions, and valuing people are added as
elements of a leader’s toolbox.
- A
NYLT course is set up to represent a month in the life of a typical
Scout troop, including mirroring the troop structure by assigning
incoming participants to patrols. The first three full days of the
course represent the first three full weeks of a troop calendar,
complete with patrol leader’s council meetings, troop meetings, patrol
meetings, and planning for a big troop event. The emphasis during this
course is becoming a leader in the BSA program, but the material applies
to many aspects of daily life such as school, work, and
personal/professional relationships. Participants use the full range of
BSA resources for planning and conducting meetings that are interesting,
lively, and relevant – a skill they can incorporate with great effect
when they return to their home troops.
